Saturday, October 16, 2021 –Opposition leader Raila Odinga will get a major city road named after him soon following a motion presented at the County Assembly.
News reaching Homenews.co.ke desk has confirmed that Nairobi County Assembly had on Wednesday October 13 approved a motion sponsored by Makongeni Member of County Assembly Peter Imwatok asking to rename Mbagathi Way after Raila Amollo Odinga as part of recognizing his work in this country.
Addressing on the issue, Mr. Imwatok argued that Odinga had immensely contributed a lot to this nation especially in creating and pushing for the current democratic space everyone is enjoying today.
He also added that the opposition supremo has helped this country fight corruption and improve economy even during tough times and it was time he be rewarded when he is still alive.
The Makongeni MCA reasoned that time to reward people who have contributed to the stability of the nation is now than waiting until they die.
“Raila fought for a greater democratic space, good governance, rule of law and development of infrastructure against innumerable odds, including detention without trial for 10 years,” Imwatok explained.
The MCA promised to make this a reality by holding talks with Nairobi leadership headed by Acting Governor Anne Kananu and Mohamed Badi to ensure that his Bill end up renaming Mbagathi Way to Raila Amollo Odinga.
“I will personally reach out to the Deputy Governor to see to it that Mbagathi Way is renamed after Raila,” he continued.
Also to be changed the name alongside the road is a school along the same Highway which will also change to Raila’s name.
“We had written to the Ministry to rename Mbagathi Primary School to Raila Odinga Primary School but it was a challenge since it was named after the road. Now that the name of the road will be changed, it shouldn’t be a problem,” Nominated MCA, Mary Arivisa stated.
Just recently, there was confusion as well as uproar when Dik Dik Road in Kileleshwa was renamed to Francis Atwoli Road. Acting Governor Kananu had a rough time explaining herself why and how this was coming around.
According to the policy by NMS led by General Mohamed Badi, a County Addressing Unit CAU comprising of members from the county and national governments will be appointed by the county executive for Planning and Urban Housing to initiate the renaming of anything within the city.
