Friday, February 4, 2022 –Raila Odinga-allied group of members have refused to back the controversial Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2022 as brought on the floor by Jubilee lawmakers.
The controversial proposal which has since caused an outrage from politicians is seeking to stop media houses from streaming live the 2022 provisional elections results. It also bars online portals from publishing the same.
Further, the amendment which has caused heat in both Tangatanga and ODM camps seeks to bring back the old manual system of tallying.
“We are not supporting the Elections (Amendment) Bill that is taking us back to the manual system of tallying which is open to manipulation and errors. The country has invested heavily in electronic systems. We can only improve on it but not revert to the manual,” stated Junet Mohamed through his social media platforms.
MP Junet who is a member of Azimio la Umoja was reacting shortly after Majority leader Amos Kimunya issued a statement saying the changes had the full blessings of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In the unwanted Bill, the elections body will also not be allowed to avail polling stations results for publication as it is done today.
The winner of the presidential race will only be declared once all the constituency results have been tallied together.
Lawmakers allied to Ruto camp were the first to raise an alarm over this with Ruto promising to apply all means possible to stop it.
“The never-ending onslaught through election law amendments is a choreographed attempt to install a puppet on the Kenyan electorate and sabotage our freedom of choice and hard-earned democracy. The plan is evil and must fail. The people have resoundingly said HATUPANGWINGWI,” said the Deputy President on his Twitter.
He would then be supported by his new-found friend Musalia Mudavadi who described the events as suspicious and which may plunge the country into another elections violence.
