Ministry to provide support to pregnant cases in schools

All pregnant learners in the country will have an opportunity to continue with their classes. Education CS Prof George Magoha has directed.

Addressing Kenyans on the reopening day, Magoha observed that it cannot be squarely blamed on learners who have, by bad luck, been impregnated and said, even though the government was pursuing suspects, this should not stop female victims from completing their education.

The cabinet Secretary further confessed that it was true there have been a rise in cases of early pregnancy but there is still need to give the victims a second chance and no head teacher or Principle will be allowed to send such cases back home.

He encouraged everyone to be empathetic to children following the long Coronavirus pandemic that ravaged the whole world and threw everyone into confusion.

“For those children who are pregnant, I assure them that they have nothing to fear and should come back to school. Teachers should be empathic to them and give them assistance,” he stated.

He also urged school administrations across the country to enlist learners with special conditions so that they can be given extra government support.

“I urge Principals and teachers to compile a list of learners with pre-existing conditions, for example, children with asthma, so that necessary attention can be given to them,” said Magoha.

The Magoha led ministry also warned school heads from sending children home due to school fees.

Teh CS noted that this was not the rightful time to pressure parents with issues to do with cash since Covid-19 pandemic had affected everybody and this government was aware of.

He added that all the directives issued today apply to both public and private schools in the country and anyone found breaking them will be punished accordingly.

About online classes, Prof Magoha remarked that those learners who had no privilege of attending to online classes would also not be punished by their respective schools.

He was speaking this when he visited Nairobi Primary School on Monday October 12.
