Tuesday, March 8, 2022 –Established American Moderna firm will be setting up another multi-million plant in Kenya as their first on the continent.
The US biotechnology firm announced that it would be pumping a staggering sum of $ 500 million (sh 56.5 billion) into its Kenyan plant which will be tasked with supplying not less than 500 million doses of mRNA vaccines in Africa.
Moderna also disclosed its noble plans to start filling doses of its vaccine in Africa. This will start as early as next year 2023. It was confirmed.
“We are pleased to partner with Moderna in the establishment of this mRNA manufacturing facility to help prepare the country and our sister states on the continent through the African Union to respond to future health crises and stave off the next pandemic,” President Uhuru Kenyatta said after announcing the deal on Monday March 7.
It is expected that the establishment will address the shortage of vaccines in Africa anytime there is a pandemic like the Covid-19.
“Moderna’s investment in Kenya will help advance equitable global vaccine access and is emblematic of the structural developments that will enable Africa to become an engine of sustainable global growth.” Uhuru added.
This good news is coming at the time African nations have piled pressure to their developed counterparts to also ensure the entire world remains safe anytime there is a life threatening outbreak.
