Government Bans Matatus Along Expressway

Wednesday, July 6, 2022 –Government has temporarily banned matatus from using the newly-launched Nairobi Expressway.

On Wednesday July 6 afternoon, Transport and Infrastructure CS James Macharia announced that PSV vehicles will not be using the road until some safety adjustments are complete along the road following a series of accidents occurring on the highway.

“We temporarily restrict commercial passenger vehicles with a capacity of more than seven passengers from using the Nairobi expressway,” he said.

He added that the directive was in effect immediately as they try to study what has been causing accidents on the road.

“Every life matters and the government is keen to avoid unnecessary injuries and loss of lives. This restriction takes effect immediately,” Macharia said.

He also announced the capping of speed limit to 110KM/Hour saying it is through such adjustments that the government can be able to know much about the road and road users.

This action is coming amid public outrage following increased road carnage that have been happening on the highway almost every day.
