Thursday, July 7, 2022 –Kiambu County Senatorial candidate Karungo wa Thang’wa can continue with his campaigns following a court verdict issued today.
High Court today Thursday July 7 directed that the candidate be allowed to campaign and participate in the August 9 elections.
Justice Rachel Ng’etich ordered the Wafula Chebukati-led Commission to quickly clear the United Democratic Alliance UDA Party hopeful to run for the seat.
The judge observed that IEBC made mistakes to disapprove the UDA Party candidate adding that the evidence they had tabled in court did not meet the required legal threshold.
The IEBC was clinging on the argument that Thang’wa was impeached from office as Education County Executive Committee Member CECM in Kiambu County.
“This court finds no reason to bar Karungo from vying for the Kiambu senator position,” judge Ngetich ruled.
Defending himself, Mr. Thang’wa argued that he only left office through reshuffles which had been announced by Kaimbu Governor James Nyoro and who had just replaced Ferdinand Waititu in 2020.
He added that if Governor Waititu was impeached for one reason or the other, that did not mean every officer in his cabinet was corrupt and responsible.
UDA Party had been affected by this suit but with the new development today, they can have a sigh of relief.
Kiambu area is one of the strongholds of Deputy President William Ruto.
