Anxiety as first Kenyan lawyer surrenders to ICC

Lawyers accused of meddling with witnesses in the International Criminal Court ICC cases that were facing both President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto have started to surrender.

Lawyer Paul Gicheru who allegedly represented DP Ruto and who was linked to legal malpractices at the Hague has today Monday November 2nd volunteered to the Dutch authorities after a five year long search.

Deputy President William Ruto in a past court session at the Hague.

Gicheru and two others are suspected of offenses against the administration of Justice at Hague based court by offering witnesses millions of cash to withdraw their statements to the prosecution.

According to Reuters, DP’s spokesperson would not immediately comment on the development other than to claim that the embattled lawyer was not part of the Ruto’s legal team.

“Today, November 2 2020, Mr. Paul Gicheru surrendered to the authorities of the Netherlands pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by a Pre-Trial Chamber two of International Criminal Court,” read part of the statement from ICC.

The lawyer is accused of improperly engaging witnesses in cases the famous Ocampo Six were facing at the International Criminal Court ICC. This happened after the 2007 Post Election Violence PEV that saw thousands of Kenyans killed in countrywide protests.

Orange Democratic Movement ODM led the historic protests against Mwai Kibaki’s victory which they thought had been bungled against Mr. Raila Odinga.

This violence left the country on fire as tribes rose against each other with pangas, machetes, merciless rape and all manner of violence that gave birth to more than 600,000 internally displaced victims.

Prosecution, during the hearing process, sensationally claimed that a scheme had been hatched to have witnesses withdraw from the entire process what then watered down the cases.

They Court then said shall there be evidence to prove that there was witness interference, the cases will be resuscitated.
