Thursday, November 10, 2022 –High profile Twitter accounts will start having a grey checkmark label. Twitter company has officially announced the new feature.
This feature, according to Director of product at Twitter, Esther Crawford, will be accorded to high-profile accounts for authenticity.
She went ahead to share a screenshot that showed Twitter’s official account having the grey checkmark label beneath the handle.
“A lot of folks have asked about how you’ll be able to distinguish between @TwitterBlue subscribers with blue checkmarks and accounts that are verified as official, which is why we’re introducing the “Official” label to select accounts when we launch,” she noted.
This is a new twist of events at the Elon Musk-owned social media company that seeks to raise revenues for its sustainability.
Though the grey checkmark is free, it will only be available to government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures.
“Not all previously verified accounts will get the “Official” label and the label is not available for purchase. Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures,” Crawford explained.
In the screengrab Crawford shared, Twitter official account had both checkmarks – regular blue and the new grey – meaning that accounts can concurrently run with both marks.
After acquiring the popular social media company two weeks ago, billionaire Elon Musk who also runs Space X and Tesla car manufacturing company in the US, announced that Twitter will be facing an overhaul in both its staff as well as verification processes.
Hundreds of staff have since been fired from the company that boast of over 450 million monthly active users as of 2022.
