Thursday, November 17, 2022 –A lobby group has attributed the recent increase in crime levels to Kenya Kwanza campaign promises.
Amnesty International Kenya Executive Director, Irungu Houghton, on Wednesday November 16, said the reason the crime level was on the rise in the country is because Kenya Kwanza alliance overpromised the youth who ignorantly believed that the new government will come with a new dawn this fast; what has turned out to be not true.
“We know that this is, primarily, arising from the cost of living and the fact that people are finding it very difficult to survive. So, in many cases, they are distressed crimes,” he said.
The Amnesty boss was reacting to the recent presidential deployment of security officers around Nairobi and its environs to help combat runaway crime.
He also cautioned President William Ruto against forming new special units to combat the crime witnessed in the city.
Houghton argued that the deployment of general Service Unit GSU as well as Rapid Deployment Unit RDP on Nairobi CBD streets should not end up creating more problems to the country.
According to his argument, such units start on a good note only to end up morphing into strong security cartels with a lot of powers like the recently disbanded Special Service Unit SSU.
“It is very important that they do not allow those units to become units unto themselves.
“What we have seen from the scandals in the last three weeks essentially is that the SSU (Special Service Unit) became essentially a law unto itself and in many cases broke the law with impunity,” he explained.
The president recently dissolved the SSU saying it was behind increased extra-judicial killings and that it had overstepped its mandate.
