Sunday, December 4, 2022 –Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale now wants Kakamega County Government to stop funding Kenya Premier League KPL side Kakamega Homeboyz.

Speaking in a burial event in his home area on Saturday December 3, the vocal legislator argued that the new county government should veer off from Oparanya’s way of leadership and embrace their own.

Khalwale asked the new governor Fernandes Barasa to immediately stop supporting the privately-owned football club, Homeboyz, and, instead, allow the newly-appointed sports CEC Morphat Mandela to come up with fresh plans to start County male and female football teams which will enjoy full funding from the county kitty.

“Team inaitwa Homeboyz ni team ya binafsi ya Oparanya na Toto, therefore, Barasa hatakuwa anatowa pesa anaweka kwa mfuko wa mtu.

“Mtengeneze a proper team yenye itaenjoy funding kutoka kwa county government. Msipeleke pesa kwa team ambayo ni ya mtu binafsi,” Khalwale advised Barasa.

In the year 2018, the County Government of Kakamega under Governor Wyckliffe Oparanya signed a multi-million annual sponsorship deal with Kakamega-based KPL side Kakamega Homeboyz valued at sh 15M.

The deal was announced by then CECM for Social Services, Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Robert Makhanu at the county headquarters in the presence of the club’s President Mr. Cleophas ‘Toto’ Shimanyula.

This decision left political players from the region divided on why Oparanya would start funding a private club.
