Tuesday, December 6, 2022 –Journalists have turned to the government for urgent help following mass layoffs in major media stations across the country.
Hundreds of the scribes drawn from different stations and who gathered in Nairobi during their Annual Journalists Meeting on Monday December 5 linked the current layoffs in media houses to reduced advertisement offers from government.
They urged the current president to quickly intervene and allocate enough budget to the stations so that they can sustain their work force that is currently threatened by sacking.
They listed Nation Media Group NMG as well as Standard Group SG as the most hit media houses that are now forced to sack part of its workers to remain afloat.
They, therefore, urged the William Ruto-led administration to increase share of government advertisement funds to the privately-owned stations.
“Kenya Kwanza administration led by President William Ruto must understand that journalists play an integral part in countries leadership,” their statement read in part.
The writers also argued that whenever other government corporations struggle financially, government has been bailing them out and that this practice should be uniform across the board.
“So we appeal to the government since Ruto stated that he is the president of the vulnerable, to intervene to prevent the job losses”.
Led by BBC Africa‘s Roncliffe Odit, the scribes appealed to President Ruto to include media houses when rolling out mitigation initiatives.
Currently, more than a half of staff in major media houses in the country have been send home due to lack of enough revenues to sustain a bloated workforce.
