Thursday, February 9, 2023 –Eight persons were rescued while seven were still fighting for their lives under goldmine rubble in Sigalgala, Kakamega.
Police issued a statement saying a gold mine caved in on Thursday February 9 morning burying 15 men who were working inside there.
“This morning at around 2 am, a goldmine caved in burying 15 young men in Sigalagala Village in Kakamega County,” partly read the statement.
The National Police Service NPS would shortly add an update saying eight people had been rescued while seven were still trapped under with efforts to save them.
“NPS Officers and County Government Officers together with emergency response teams from the County, Red Cross and the locals are on the scene helping with the rescue mission,” also read the statement.
Those who were rescued were rushed to the Kakamega County General Hospital KCGH and were reportedly responding well to medication.
A video shared later showed rescue teams pulling out survivors as ambulance on standby drove them to the Kakamega hospital.
This is not the first incident at the gold mine, more than five such incidences have taken place at the same place with several lives lost and scores left with permanent injuries.
