Saturday, February 18, 2023 –President William Ruto wants international lenders to respect African countries with regard to financial offers.
Speaking during the 36th Session of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa Ethiopia on Saturday February 18, straight-talking Kenyan president took issue with the financiers saying they are marginalizing the continent what is un acceptable if equality is what one can gauge this by.
“The World Bank and International Monetary Fund must plan with a new image of Africa in mind; a continent of transformation and a legitimate stakeholder in the conversation on climate and development financing,” he stated.
President Ruto accused the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund IMF and the International Finance Corporation IFC of failing to avail climate financing mechanisms and funding multilateral development as it is supposed to be.
He described this behaviour from the developed worlds as a deliberate sinister motive meant to promote inequality and exploitation; what will end up depriving the continent necessary tools to fight eventualities.
“This is my simple and direct message to the World Bank, the IMF and the IFC: Africanise, or perish!
“For global development finance to be future-proof, it must align with the aspirations of the continent of the future, as an existential imperative. For this to happen, the multilateral development financing sector must attain a significant measure of Africanisation in all aspects,” President Ruto further warned.
He called upon fellow African heads of State to come together and work on the best ways to strengthen the continent through strategic planning and development.
Ruto jetted out of the country a day ago in what government announced as going for an official duty in the neighboring Ethiopia.
He was accompanied by a section of his Cabinet team among them Trade CS Moses Kuria and Foreign Affairs CS Dr. Alfred Mutua in the event dubbed the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
