Froday, February 24, 2023 -Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was fired from African Union AU office after President William Ruto reportedly made the request.
A source speaking to a local news outlet established that Ruto held a side line meeting during one of his recent continental tours where it was decided that Mr. Odinga is nolonger fit to run the office.
The source added that presidents have powers to influence the position anytime.
“Remember Uhuru Kenyatta who proposed this position for Odinga is nolonger there.
“This was a polite termination and the request was made on the sidelines of the AU Summit,” the diplomat told Nation on Thursday, February 2.
A different source in the Kenyan delegation also alleged that the head of State made sure Odinga is replaced because of his unending politics.
Immediately, the AU, would be left with no other option but to heed the request given that independent agencies in the country, such as the Supreme Court validated Ruto’s victory; same to foreign observer missions.
Media has further established that Raila’s continued threats to the regime was discussed in the hour-long meeting that finally recommended his removal.
Yesterday Thursday February 23, the Azimio leader published a statement refuting the sack rumour; he instead said he had requested to be relieved of his duty as AU special envoy for infrastructure.
“I indicated the challenges to my continued availability for the role of AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa.
“In that regard, I welcome your quick action that will free me to pursue other pressing and urgent matters,” partly read the statement.
Raila joined AU leadership in 2018 after entering into Handshake agreement with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
