Monday, March 13, 2023 –The Director of Public Prosecutions DPP has dropped all the charges the Director of Criminal Investigations DCI had leveled against former Interior Cabinet Secretary CS Fred Matiang’i.
On Monday, March 13, the DPP confirmed dropping allthe charges againstthe former Interior CS and his lawyer, Danstan Omari.
“The evidence provided did not meet the ingredients needed to prove each of the fore- mentioned offences as required by law.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions has therefore directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to close the inquiry file with no further police action,” partly read the acquittal statement over the charges – conspiracy to commit a felony and publication of false information.
Turning against the DCI, ODPP stated that after independently reviewing statements from the witnesses and analysing the available evidence, it did not find a reason to continue charging Matiang’i in court.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions found that the evidence provided was not sufficient to sustain the above charges,” further clarified the statement.
Charges against the former CS were a result of a report of an alleged invasion by police officers at his Karen home on February 8; something that saw opposition leader, friends and colleagues go into solidarity with him and, at some point, Matiang’i had to mysteriously leave the country before returning.
And on his return, he was served summons by the DCI what saw him visit the headquarters where drama again ensued forcing the opposition to come to his rescue. He would be released after about nine hours.
