Thursday, March 16, 2023 –Outspoken Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has challenged the government to bring down the cost of flour so that Raila can stop going to the streets for the millions of those who supported him.
Addressing the matter on Citizen Tv with Trevor Ombija on Thursday March 16 morning, the vocal Orange Party lawmaker noted that the looming demonstrations are not for their own benefit but for poor Kenyans who were promised affordable life by the current regime which captured power on August 9.
“We (Azimio) are not interested in a handshake; we are protesting on behalf of Kenyans who are unable to afford meals…if the govt announces they have taken down the price of unga to sh 70, what will we have to tell people?” Senator Sifuna stated.
He clarified that the William Ruto led-government had refused to listen to any advice from outsiders who did not vote for him what has then led to the current political standoff.
“We are going to the streets because the government has refused our offers. We have no other option left rather than to walk with the rest of the country,” he added.
He went ahead to ask the government to employ the jobless youth who it thinks are being misused by the opposition.
“Employ the youth who are unemployed so that they don’t come to our maandamano,” he charged.
Sifuna further noted that the past Handshake govt is an excuse used by the current regime to dodge implementing their ambitious promises made during the campaigns.
Asked how they will ensure there are no destructions around the city during their first mass action, Sifuna explained that the police as well as the county government both have a role to keep every body whether protesting or not secured.
“The High Court gave its verdict on how protests are supposed to be done. We have the guidelines and everybody has his role.
“I have written to Governor John Sakaja to avail ambulances in the city, clean public toilets and water faucets ahead of March 20th demos,” he added.
The first-time senator revealed that Ruto ignored requests from Azimio la Umoja to have a dialogue with the government hence the reason behind the vehement anti-government protests that may not end anytime soon.
Ruto’s allies on the other hand have asked the State to pin any destruction made in the protests to Raila Odinga saying he should be held responsible.
