Tuesday, March 21, 2023 –Governor Johnson Sakaja has continued appealing to the government to think of resolving its issues with the opposition so that Nairobi can continue with its development plan.
In his Tuesday March 21 statement on the effects of the ongoing city demonstrations, the first-time governor disclosed that the Monday protest led to a huge loss in revenues.
In the statement, Mr. Sakaja noted that the Nairobi’s Central Business District CBD was most hit in tax collection levels.
“I’ll still appeal that we need a solution,” he urged.
He was speaking at City Hall during the launch of the second Rapid Results Initiative wave, where he also promised to make sure anyone who vandalized the city is arrested and charged in court.
He mentioned that it is on record some crooks were captured vandalizing city’s infrastructure including signposts erected to give streets their identity.
“Those who took advantage and uprooted public infrastructure, I saw someone carrying the Tom Mboya Street signage, those who were captured must be charged,” the governor recounted.
This comes even as the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition leader Mr. Raila Odinga announced weekly protests against the administration of President William Ruto.
Raila, today Tuesday March 21, directed his supporters to show up twice per week – Mondays and Thursdays – saying these changes were triggered by increasing public demand.
“On the second phase we will begin protests on Monday and Thursday starting next week,” he said.
This move comes in the wake of opposition demonstrations that kicked off in Nairobi on Monday, in which his supporters engaged police officers in running battles.
