Monday, April 3, 2023 –Government has explained why there was seen a huge police presence around Nairobi City on Monday April 3morning
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, on Monday, April 3, revealed that this had to happen since arrangements had already been put in place before the opposition’s statement with the President.
He also added that police will continue being present in some spots perceived to be volatile for protests.
“Aware that hooligans who were set to take advantage of the chaos to loot and steal could still be prepared to continue, our security officers are vigilant and on full alert,” the DP stated the need for the continued deployment.
He, however, said William Ruto’s government was ready to make sure there is sanity and peace around the country throughout.
“With the calling off of the demonstrations and violence, I urge all Kenyans to go back to work and resume their businesses with vigour and alacrity.
“All lawbreakers will be swiftly apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law. I am happy our economy which had started showing signs of recovery is now back on track,” he added.
In an earlier statement on Sunday, April 2, the DP alongside his boss William Ruto congratulated Raila Odinga for calling off the ugly demonstrations.
But even as they were saying this, the opposition leader maintained that he had temporarily halted the anti-State protests to see how the dialogue fairs on, warning that if by bad luck it collapses due to lack of goodwill, he may revert back to the streets.
“But in doing so, we want to emphasize that the rights to assemble, demonstrate, petition, and speak are ironclad as provided for in our constitution.
“Therefore, we reserve our right to call for demonstrations should this process not bear fruit. Should there be no meaningful engagement, or response from Hon Ruto to our counter offer, we resolve to resume our demonstrations after a week.”
