Monday, April 3, 2023 –President Joe Biden of the United States government has commended the Sunday April 2 truce between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto.
Through US ambassador in Nairobi, Meg Whitman, Biden stated that the duo’s gesture to put aside their personal ego was a step forward towards a peaceful coexistence.
Ms Meg Whitman added that this relationship between the opposition and government sets stage for increased international investments in the country.
Additionally, she argued that this dialogue, if pushed to the end, will be of higher benefit to the citizens most of whom have been inconvenienced by the Monday and Thursday clashes in the city.
“We welcome the agreement by President Ruto and former PM Raila Odinga to establish a bipartisan process to find solutions that benefit all Kenyans.
“We commend both leaders for their commitment to peaceful dialogue and call on all parties to support this process,” she remarked.
On Friday, March 31, Raila revealed that he had held a private meeting with the US envoys led by Delaware Senator Chris Coons over calling off his mass protests.
The ODM Party boss disclosed that, during their meeting, he had accused the US ambassador, Whitman, for praising Ruto’s administration which bungled last polls denying him his deserved victory.
“She was saying that Kenya had the most transparent election in the history of Kenya last year in August. I told her that she did not know which country she was talking about. She was in the country a few days before those elections took place,” Raila responded while attending burial event of Mama Grace Akech Onyango in Gem, Siaya County.
But days later, the two, Raila and Ruto, started talks that many believe could now bring peace back into the country.
