Monday, April 10, 2023 –Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda and area governor Fernandes Barasa are reportedly embroiled in party leadership wrangles.
According to reports reaching Homenews.co.ke desk on Tuesday April 10, the two ODM Party elected leaders are fighting over local party leadership; with Muhanda questioning the purported changes made by the governor, recently.
For instance, Ms Muhanda disputed the declaration by a section of ODM delegates in Kakamega who, prematurely, had endorsed Governor Barasa as their new ODM Party chair in the County.
Addressing on Saturday, 8, 2023, in a burial ceremony at Lubanga Village in Matungu Constituency, Governor Barasa announced that he had been fully declared to be the next ODM Party chairman in the area.
But in a rejoinder from the top party leadership, National Delegates Convention NDC – held on February 26, 2022, any grassroots elections were differed to a later date.
“As the party organ mandated to carryout elections within the party including the election of party officials, we wish to remind our party members, supporters, and the public in general that no elections or replacement of officials will take place without the approval of NEB as provided in law,” read part of the ODM statement seen by this writer.
Earlier on, Ms Muhanda had told local media that her life was in danger and that she had been warned not to visit Matungu area where party activities were being held.
But ODM leadership in Nairobi has clarified that Kakamega wrangles are premature and that the current office bearers will remain in office until when elections are held.
