Sunday, April 30, 2023 –National Assembly Speaker Moses Masika Wetang’ula has told former President Uhuru Kenyatta to keep off politics.

Wetang’ula, who was speaking in a church service at Makutano Stadium in Kapenguria, West Pokot accompanied by President William Ruto, urged the former head of State to save his face and status by keeping off politics; this he said will also give his successor an easier time to reconstruct the country.

The Speaker mentioned other East African retired heads of State who retired peacefully and concentrated on family and private business matters at home.

“In Tanzania Julius Nyerere, Mwinyi, Benjamin Mkapa and Jakaya Kiwate have all kept quiet after their retirement. Here Mr. Kenyatta requires prayers,” Wetang’ula quipped.

He also reminded Uhuru of President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi who was one of the most feared leaders but, after losing power in 2002, he decided to quietly go home never to be heard of again.

“The law requires that after six months in retirement, the former head of State has to stop politicking. Moi was revered President but after retirement he never addressed even a nursery school group.

“Kibaki also retired and never came back to address even 10 persons anywhere. His name remains respected until today,” he said.

Wetang’ula, therefore, urged Mr Kenyatta to respect himself for the sake of the country and his own image.

The former Bungoma County senator added that retired presidents have nothing to do with parties’ squabbles and, this, Uhuru has to accept or suffer more public embarrassments.

“It was an embarrassment when I saw youth pushing the former president and, in return, he responded with a push too,” Wetang’ula recounted

Wetang’ula was speaking this in reference to the recent confrontation which ensued at Jubilee headquarters when Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta stormed the premises claiming the police had been sent there to grab his party.
