Wednesday, May 31, 2023 –Opposition leader Raila Odinga has today rewarded the youth who joined him in the recent Nairobi City anti-government protests.
On Wednesday may 31, Mr. Odinga assembled hundreds of city youth in Westlands area and rewarded them with various machines to help them earn a living.
He asserted that all the young men and women who were at the heart of his demonstrations now need to be supported as he had earlier promised them.
Odinga used the opportunity to promise that he will continue walking with them and will do that which he can to help them fight poverty.
“Ahadi ni deni (a promise is a debt).
“When I called on the young people to come out in large numbers and demonstrate against the government, you heeded the call and came in to defend democracy,” he stated
The Orange Democratic Movement ODM Party boss lauded the young gallants in the opposition whom he said they remained firm even when the government was visiting havoc on peaceful demonstrators.
“They threatened you with claims that it was not going to be business as usual, but you still came out and demonstrated against the government until they told us to calm down and have talks,” he added.
The Azimio la Umoja boss was accompanied by area Member of Parliament MP Tim Wanyonyi who he used his youth empowerment programme to distribute the machines e.g electronic car wash machines and mechanical devices which the youth will be using to take part in economic activities within Nairobi to earn a living.
Men who showed up were given compressors and motor vehicle mechanical liners, which they will use at their places of work.
On the other hand, women received beauty and beautification equipment such as dryers and salon kits for their businesses.
Odinga promised to support Tim Wanyonyi’s 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial bid having failed to endorse him in 2022 after Azimio coalition settled on Polycarp Igathe.
Speaking in the event, MP Wanyonyi, who is serving his third term now, thanked his party leader for supporting him in launching the first phase of the Nairobi Youth and Women Empowerment Program NYWEP.
