Friday, June 30, 2023 –In his efforts to reduce graft within government departments, President William Ruto has announced only a single Pay Bill Number for all government transactions.
On Friday June 30 while launching Gava Mkononi App which is a version of e-Citizen, Dr. Ruto said he is working on ways of making sure efficiency, accountability and transparency remains top in all government-publictransactions.
The head of State clarified that this realignment will drastically cut down corruption tendencies which occur due to physical interactions during State activities.
And from today Friday June 30, Ruto unveiled 222222 as the official Pay Bill number for every State payment in the country.
“We must shut down the rest of the Pay Bill Numbers and remain only with one to channel all the money to the government through Treasury,” Ruto announced.
In his defence, the president argued that so many Pay Bill channels were not only confusing but also allowing corruption to thrive in government services.
He added that, accounting in government had also been complicated with the many Pay Bill Numbers which have been in operation for years.
Additionally, Ruto noted that it had become difficult to hasten auditing of books of accounts by the auditor general and, to make this efficient, there was need to harmonise activities in government.
“Mobile money pay bill numbers are a convenient and secure way for the government to collect payments from those seeking services.
“The 222222 Pay Bill Number offers a cost-effective way to collect payments, as there are very small fees associated with it,” Ruto stated.
In mobile money transactions, the pay bill number is a unique identifier that is assigned to each business or government department that uses mobile money payments means.
In many cases, when one is not using Pay Bill, he or she could choose to use Lipa na M-Pesa Number as per Safaricom available services.
