Wednesday, July 5, 2023 –President William Ruto has directed Kenya Power and Lighting KPLC to stop disconnecting illegal power cables when it is the Company’s job to fix meters where there is none.
In a viral video clip seen by Homenews.co.ke, on Wednesday July 5, as shared by a section of online army, the president, in what seems to be a direct reaction to the Kitengela incident involving UDA MP Nimrod Mbai, said it was wrong to disconnect the whole estate and that the utility provider should have fixed meters where they think there is none.
“Connect everybody with meters and ask for payment because that is your work. Stop bullying customers,” Ruto directed in a clip seen by Homenews.co.ke.
He further advised the utility provider staff to learn to go around looking for connection and provide necessary support systems to areas without.
“Find anyone connected with electricity by whatever means and meter him or her so that when he fails you can then take necessary action.
“Do not disconnect the whole estate because of your laxity and failure,” a visibly angry Ruto added.
He was speaking this even as another video emerged showing an angry man wielding a panga threatening a KPLC staff for coming to disconnect power lines from his home.
In the video shared on Twitter by Alinur Mohamed, the KPLC engineer had been forced to remain on top of the power pole as the man showed him a sharpened panga from the ground.
This was happening a few minutes after the police arrested Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai who had slapped a KPLC staff at his Kitengela home in Kajiado County.
Mbai has since been arrested after the police flashed him out of his hideout in Mavoko area in Ukambani.
