Thursday, July 6, 2023 –A Siaya Court has today blocked the recently-elected Luo Council of Elders from taking office.
In its verdict seen by Homenews.co.ke on Thursday July 6, the court delivered that Mzee Odungi Randa will not assume the role of the Council until the matter filed in court by splinter group is concluded.
The petition blocking him was filed by a faction which is allied to Nyandiko Ongadi citing some inconsistencies and lack of proper consultation.
Citizen Digital reported that Justice Daniel Ogembo issued the order maintaining the status quo in the leadership of the Luo Council of Elders.
Nyandiko Ngadi faction which filed the case had obtained an order stopping the recent event dubbed ‘Piny Luo Extravaganza’ which took place in Homa Bay with various cultural festivals that culminated in the election of Mzee Odungi Randa as the new Chairman of the Luo Council of Elders.
Interestingly, the event went on as planned and a new chair of the Luo Council Mzee Randa was elected and crowned.
“I will honour and comply with the rules governing the council. I will not betray Luos as a community,” Randa said.
Present in the function was Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition Party leader Raila Odinga, his wife Ida Odinga, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif counterpart Gladys Wanga among other local politicians.
Raila used the opportunity to call upon his larger Luo Nyanza to unite ahead of his July 7, Saba Saba renewal.
The application that was filed under a certificate of urgency before Siaya High Court Judge Justice Daniel Ogembo had nine petitioners including Nyandiko Ongadi, Thomas Achando, Silas Olala, Okeyo Abebe, Oduogo Gwena, Margaret Nyambok, Felix Okal, Pius Odote and Stephene Oludhe.
The petitioners through their advocate Duncan Okatch have subsequently written to the Registrar of Societies to stop any alteration on the register of the Luo Council of Elders.
