Raila Addresses Ruto’s Invite for Talks

Wednesday, July 26, 2023 – Opposition leader Raila Odinga has indicated his unwillingness to honour President William Ruto’s social media invite for talks.

Countering Ruto’s Tuesday July 25 evening post that garnered thousands of reactionsfrom Kenyans, today Odinga has mentioned that the manner in which Ruto made the communication was not mature for someone who intends to address a serious national matter.

“The President is not being serious. If he wanted to meet with me, he would not have sent an invite through social media,”  Raila said.

He noted that the Tuesday social media communication portrayed Dr. Ruto as a man who was just playing his usual publicity stunts to manage the political environment; hence cannot be trusted for any meaningful discussion as of now.

The Azimio la Umoja leader, who was speaking this on Al Jazeera in an event held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation in Nairobi, also sought to understand why the president would choose to communicate a serious matter on Twitter and Facebook.

“He knows my address and telephone number and everything. He is basically just playing games. That is like his public relations exercise,” the former prime minister stated.

Mr. Odinga revisited his earlier statement on the Tanzanian head of State Samia Suluhu who was shown a cold back by William Ruto, weeks ago despite coming in the country for mediation.

“I mentioned yesterday that two weeks ago, the President of Tanzania Suluhu Hassan, came here to Kenya at his invitation and she spent two days here wishing to bring us together,” Mr. Odinga added.

He, therefore, noted that this treatment on Samia Suluhu was disrespect and could affect the relationship between the two countries, owing to the fact that President Suluhu was invited by his counterpart in Kenya.

Earlier today, Ugunja Member of Parliament also National Assembly Minority leader, Opiyo Wandayi, took a swipe at Ruto for making such an important communication through social media.

Wandayi described President Ruto’s actions as not only juvenile but also impolite and which cannot be trusted by those in the opposition.
