Wednesday, August 2, 2023 –Government side has unveiled its five-member team to faceoff with Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of their scheduled talks.

The team coming just days after Raila Odinga unveiled his camp which is led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

President Ruto unveiled National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Leader of Majority of the Senate, Aaron Cheruiyot, Governor Cecily Mbarire, Hassan Omar and Catherine Wambilianga.

The coming in of MP Ichung’wah means a titanic faceoff as he had already indicated what he wanted from the talks.

He was on record claiming that the four-points listed on a document he had signed, was agreed upon in the presence of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Obasanjo met with Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga on a Friday in a hotel in Mombasa; the meeting was restricted to three persons only.

The items indicted by Ichung’wah included the reconstitution of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC, implementation of the 2/3 gender rule and entrenchment of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Another issue was the establishment and the entrenchment of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition and the embedment of the office of Prime Cabinet Secretary.

“For avoidance of doubt, brutality shall no longer and shall never be part of our nation’s political discourse. As agreed, there shall be no discussion of whatever nature on matters handshake or ‘nusu mkate,” the statement read in part.

Azimio team comprises Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, National Assembly Minority leader Opiyo Wandayi, Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni and Malindi MP Amina Mnyanzi.

Following the release of the agreement letters by the two camps, the two sides were divided over the discussion of the cost of living.

Speaking on the cost of living, President Ruto stated that his government was already working on the matter and, therefore, no need to hold talks on the same.

He, instead, challenged the opposition camp to stop streets demonstrations which he noted that have contributed to destruction of the economy.
