Thursday August 17, 2023 –Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago, two others were today, Thursday August 17 morning, arraigned in a Nakuru Court for plea taking exercise over the Finland education programme scandal.
Senator Mandago and company, accused of scholarship fraud, was brought to the court early in the morning in tightly secured environment.
The court also learnt from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI that one official linked to the Finland Scholarship scandal had already sneaked out of the country immediately investigations started.
This revelation came to play after the former governor was arrested from his Eldoret home on Wednesday August 16.
Mandago’s accomplices – two – were also picked up separately amid intensified calls from scholarship victims to recover their lost money.
“A third suspect Joseph Maritim, is believed to have sneaked out of the country at the height of the investigation,” DCI reported in a statement.
The DCI would explain that the court warrants for the accused were issued after Mandago and the other three failed to appear in court as had been summoned.
“Earlier, the trio had failed to appear in court to face charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, abuse of office among other charges, prompting a warrant of arrest to be issued for their immediate arrest,” a statement from the DCI noted.
Further earlier, the former governor had defended self from the police saying he had met and discussed with the affected families on how their money will be refunded to each of them.
Detectives established that county officials were handling huge sums of cash between April and September last year. The same time the country was at the height of campaigns.
Parents from around Usain Gishu lamented that county officials planned to swindle their money through a botched multimillion scholarship programme.
The affected students would then be left on their own after failing to remit tuition and accommodation fees as was in the deal.
