Sunday, September 3, 2023 –President William Ruto has received English Premier League EPL trophy at the Statehouse, Kenya.
The trophy was brought in by Football Federation body FIFA and EPL officials for a brief reception that saw Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba also attend.
In his remarks, President Ruto observed that the English Premier League EPL has remained a great inspiration for young talents across the world.
“The League is an inspiration to millions of young footballers across the world; Africa, Kenya included. It is the ultimate football destination,” Ruto remarked.
He listed the likes of Victor Wanyama, his brother Mc Donald Mariga Divock Origi among a few others who have plied their trade in Europe.
“The league has hosted former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama, who played for Southampton and later Tottenham Hotspurs and Divock Origi (formerly Liverpool), son of former Stars icon Mike Origi,” Ruto said in a statement seen by Homenews.Co.ke.
The Commander-in-Chief noted that the commercial potential of professional football is substantial enough to inspire many upcoming talents, change lives of thousands of players, coaches and communities.
He, therefore, promised to make sure his administration, through the Sports department, properly manages the game to develop and exploit the local potential.
Ex-Nigerian star Jay Jay Okocha accompanied the EPL-FIFA delegation.
