Tuesday, September 26, 2023 –Haiti has rejected plans by Kenya to step on their soil in the name of peace-keeping mission as recently announced.
Latest news has confirmed that various authorities in Haiti have petitioned the African Union AU not to allow Kenya to join activities in Haiti terming such a move as invasion.
The Caribbean country argued in a letter addressed to the AU top leadership that for Kenya to quickly accept to help in peace reinforcement in Haiti was a mistake in the first place.
In the joint letter dated August 10 and shared on Rezo Nodwes website, the Haitian warned that whatever mission Kenya was upto is unnecessary since it sounds more of colonial order..
“None of the countries of the land of our ancestors (Africa) must serve as a sounding board or armed arm of the former colonial, slave-owning powers, transformed into imperialist powers and today actively engaged in a criminal project of destabilisation of ‘Haiti, systematic sabotage of its sovereignty of which the American-UN occupation constitutes a dangerous step’,” part of the letter read.
In the tough-worded letter, the more than 65 petitioners sought to know from President Ruto why he thinks Canada and other governments had rejected such orders from the U.S despite the money and other incentives that come with it.
“Has the Kenyan government asked itself why Canada and other countries have, in fact, refused, despite pressure or advantages offered, to engage in this dubious enterprise?” the letter posed.
They have, therefore, has urged the AU to summon Kenya since the move contravenes the logic in the laid down AU statutes.
“It is your duty to find the most effective strategy to explain to the leaders of this brother country that such a choice is likely to encourage, to reinforce in Haiti the already unacceptable interference of imperialist powers including the United States of America. America especially,” the letter continued.
This letter coming just days after Kenya agreed to send troops in the war-torn Haiti to help in peace restoration.
This week, President Joe Biden sent to Kenya his Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III, where he met with both President Ruto and Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale to sign and agree on the funding ahead of the deployment.
In the five year agreement, U.S has agreed to fund the security exercise to the tune of $100 million an equivalent of sh 14.6 billion.
