Wednesday, September 27, 2023 –Football Kenya Federation FKF has confirmed that Kenya’s bid to host AFCON matches had gone through.

Kenya will now be among the few nations which will be hosting the continental African games alongside neighbours like Tanzania and Uganda.

Interestingly, bigwigs like Senegal, Botwana and Central Africa failed to clinch the acceptance positions.

The trio of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania submitted a joint bid seeking to host the African tournament in a move that has been described as ‘historic’ since this is their first time in life.

Their bid dubbed the East Africa Pamoja bid saw the light of day during the CAF Executive meeting which was chaired by President Patrice Motsepe in Cairo.

Present in the event was Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Sports CS Ababu Namwamba alongside Kenya’s FKF top officials led by their President Nick Mwendwa.

Reacting to the good news today Wednesday September 27, leaders among them Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Kericho County Senator Aaron Cheruiyot lauded efforts by the Sports department in the country for fighting hard to win the slots.

“This is great news. Don’t mess it up,” Sifuna commended.

On his part, Mr. Cheruiyot said, this was a job well-done by the Sports sector in the country led by CS Ababu Nwamwamba and his able team.

“Wow…. Well done GOK, FKF, Min of Sports, CS Ababu, Nick Mwendwa and the entire East Africa crew. Let’s do this,” the senator stated in a statement seen by Homenews.Co.ke.

In the race to secure the bid, Ministry of Sports unveiled plans to revamp three stadia to meet international standards including Kasarani, Nyayo, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, respectively.

The William Ruto-led government is also planning to build the newly-established Talanta Stadium at the Jamhuri Sports Grounds along Ngong Road in Nairobi.
