Wednesday, November 29, 2023Raila Odinga has started beating Referendum drums just days after analysing the National Dialogue report prepared at the Bomas of Kenya.

Addressing in their Parliamentary Group PG meeting held today Wednesday, Mr. Odinga rallied his members to support the National Dialogue Committee report but equally added a referendum rider.

At the same time, Mr. Odinga promised to continue with the struggle to lower the cost of living through other available avenues.

He stated that the NADCO proposals on lowering cost of living for Kenyans are underwhelming.

Raila announces other avenues

Mr. Odinga, therefore, said it is an unfinished document and said other avenues to lower the cost will be pressed on by the people of Kenya until the State can listen and address their plight.

The cost-of-living matter has, for some time, attracted a sharp public discourse with some section threatening to go back to the streets.

Odinga, through his speech today, said even though Azimio side tried to address the cost of living during the Dialogue talks, government side remained adamant that that is a prerogative of the elected administration.

He added that the William Ruto side sustained a hardliners stance that could not give room for nany other viable proposal from the opposition side.

“Though they held their hardliners stance on cost of living, we are not shot of other options. We are going to seek other ways to press the government to listen to the people,” he announced.

Signaling another round of high-octane political season, Azimio la Umoja boss who accused the State of a push back all through the talks, said people must have a say in the establishment of extra offices which are not in the Constitution.

“People must take steps deemed necessary to pile pressure on their government. Offices of the opposition as well as that of the prime cabinet secretary must be created through the available Constitutional channels and this is through a referendum,” Raila stated.

Earlier this week, Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua and DAP-Kenya Party boss Eugene Wamalwa had warned that they will not be part of the report prepared at the Bomas saying it had fallen short of addressing the plight of the poor in the society.

“I didn’t and will not append my signature to the NADCO report and have not and will not accept any sitting allowance for the same because I believe we did not do justice to the single most important issue to Kenyans; the cost of living,” Wamalwa said while addressing a congregation in Tingolo Catholic Church in Busia County on a Sunday,

Both politicians were absent in today’s PG.

Creation of extra offices

Odinga said extra offices must be created through a say from the people and this is a referendum making it clear that sich a significant restructuring must be through a referendum to avoid court suits and mischief from some sections.

On his part, Mr. Musyoka affirmed that it is only through the power of the people that the report can be made authentic or dismissed.

“We will be engaging Kenyans further in the coming weeks as we must because the pain of the cost of living is really unbearable.

“In the coming weeks the majority of Kenyans will be carrying the burden of increased school fees and increased healthcare costs; besides the many crises in both the education and health sectors,” Kalonzo gave his side of the dialogue report.

The Wiper Party leader added that employees of the NHIF are currently thrown in limbo not knowing their future employment status; this making some of the reasons Azimio must stand on the side of the masses.
