Thursday, November 30, 2023 –Transport agency has directed the police to start weeding out any private cars carrying out passenger services.
In a directive issued by the Minsitry of Roads and Transport today Thursday November 30, Cs Kipchumba Murkomen asked the National Transport and Safety Authority NTSA to launch a nationwide crackdown on private vehicles and seize those found operating passenger business.
The CS who was speaking to Matatu owners Association in Nairobi during the National Delegates Council Meeting held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre KICC on Thursday, noted that laws governing Public Service vehicles must adhered to and whoever will be found breaking this should be punished.
He clarified that all private cars doing PSV services on the roads will be weeded out or forced to fulfill all the public transport permissions.
“As a Kenyan before you board any vehicle, first make sure the car you are boarding is a PSV. Otherwise, once we catch you, you’ll be left stranded wherever the car will be found,” Murkomen stated.
In his speech, today, Murkomen directed all private vehicles in the matatu sector to urgently consider registering to become part of the Matatu Owners Association MOA.
In his list he mentioned Voxy, Sienta, and Probox as notorious cars which had gone on Kenyans roads to ferry passengers and goods without having acquired necessary papers.
“I cannot just tell you this and fail to implement it. From tomorrow morning Kazi inaanza (work begins),” CS Murkomen further warned.
Speaking about reckless driving, Murkomen said drunk driving, revelers and other vices had caused many deaths to road users and promised to strengthen safety through well-trained and disciplined traffic cops.
These directives coming just a day after he also announced that any driver who will be caught crossing flooded rivers and bridges will be arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Fresh data from the NTSA confirms that, at least, 120 persons have died in floods amid increasing El Nino rains across many parts of the country.
