Tuesday, December 5, 2023 –Detectives have arrested Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang’o over alleged public complaints.
The State official was arrested in Mombasa for complaints filed against her in 2016 with her arrest having been confirmed by the Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, Jacinta Nyamosi.
The Controller of Budget is accused among eleven others who are set to face charges bordering on fraud and operating unlicensed SACCO.
The public prosecution office also listed other offenses which included forgery and being in possession of false documents against Section 353 of the Penal Code.
ODPP said, after perusing through the listed charges and related investigation, there was sufficient evidence to prove that the group had broken the law.
The complainant’s letter was handed to the public prosecution office on October 31, 2023 which listed all the offenses above.
“The file was again resubmitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions through a letter dated October 31, 2023, for further directions and upon perusal of the new evidence, we find that the following persons are criminally culpable,” the letter read in part as seen by the media.
Interestingly, Ms Nyakang’o who took office on December 4, 2019, has been on the forefront speaking out about the ongoing money irregularities in government.
Both in the national and county government, the controller of budget has unearthed several corruptions deals some which are yet to be investigated and prosecuted.
For example, on March 7, 2023, Mrs. Nyakang’o confessed that she was coerced to sign off sh15 billion days before the 2022 General Election.
And in September, she also raised the alarm over the sh15.3 billion spent by the National Treasury without approval.
She accused the Treasury of spending billions without following the law, expressing fears that the funds could be misappropriated by powerful persons in government.
She is also on record claiming that most State officials’ salaries are inflated three times more than what they earn on monthly basis; giving her own example.
