Wednesday, January 31, 2024 -Chief Justice Martha Koome has responded back to President William Ruto’s continued tirade on the Judiciary.
Speaking during a meeting with heads of missions and development partners in Nairobi Kenya on Tuesday, Koome said decisions made by judges during court sessions cannot be discussed again unless the affected parties go back for an appeal.
She remained firm that judges make decisions based on their understanding of law and evidence produced before them.
“What we are not going to accept is discussing the merits of court decisions. This we will not. If someone thinks certain rulings are not in tandem with their own law, then the best thing to do is to appeal,” she noted.
And speaking on her recent meeting with the executive, Koome said openness to dialogue with other arms of government should not be mistaken to mean interference with court decisions and autonomy.
“When we open ourselves to discussions with anybody, it doesn’t mean we are open to discussing what the court should and should not have done,” she added.
Her remarks coming days after President William Ruto was visibly angered by the recent decision made by courts to stop his housing levy and the Haiti police deployment exercise.
Ruto openly accused the judiciary of plotting to frustrate his bid to create job opportunities for millions of youths in the country.
Azimio, in their Tuesday January 30, press briefing, warned the executive against excesses and meddling in the Judiciary resolve to deal with impunity.
“Azimio stands for rule of laws and an independent Judiciary and, therefore, Kenya Kwanza administration must keep off its hand from the Judiciary
The opposition’s statement was read by Narc-Kenya Party leader Martha Karua who was flanked by Raila Odinga, Eugene Wamalwa and Wiper Party boss Kalonzo Musyoka.
