Friday, February 2, 2024 –Government has announced an urgent countrywide crackdown against illegal gas plants and stations.
In a statement seen by Kenyawide.com today Friday, The Ministry of Interior and Coordination jointly with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, announced new measures that will ensure gas explosions and related risk are managed early in time.
“Immediate rollout of Government LPG growth strategy which includes the development and implementation of a track and trace the framework for LPG cylinders to improve traceability and accountability,” read part of the statement by the Ministry of Interior, said Prof Kindiki
This exercise, the Ministry noted, will see a number of questionable gas stations shut down should they not have demolished them.
This urgent exercise is going to be effected through what the Interior Ministry called the Multi-Agency Rapid Result Initiative.
“Our teams will fully collaborate with other Government agencies to investigate this incident and prosecute any persons found in breach of the law,” also read the statement.
And to improve accountability on the side of dealers, government said it is going to also roll out the LPG growth strategy which will help take note of rogue and careless dealers in the industry.
In that line, any dealer who will be found refilling gas cylinders without an express permission from the brand manufacturer will face the law.
Apart from enhancement of awareness to the members of the public, through sensitization programmes, the State has resolved to strengthen the LPG data verification framework which it feels will make accountability even easier.
So far, it has been confirmed that three lives were lost in the Embakasi night inferno as over 200 others were critically injured.
The Thursday February 1 incidence took place at about 11.30PM.
