DCI Shares Names of Key Suspects in Embakasi gas Blast

Tuesday, February 6, 2024 -The Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI has released names of all suspects in the Embakasi gas blast that claimed lives and left several people including children injured.

Confirming the arrest on Tuesday February 6 morning, the DCI noted that the key suspect who had rented the area of scene is one Derrick Kimathi.

“On 1st February, 2024 at around 11.30pm, a huge blast incident took place at an illegal LPG gas refilling point situated at Mradi area of Embakasi, Nairobi.

“The LPG refilling site is rented by Derrick Kimathi (the prime suspect) and put under untold physical and emotional suffering to fellow Kenyans,” the confirmation report partly read.

Other suspects in the crime and who work with the National Environment Management Authority NEMA are: Stephen Kilonzo (the site manager), Ann Kabiri Mirungi of NEMA, Lynette Cheruyoit (NEMA’s Senior Environmental Officer), truck driver Robert Gitau and Abraham Mwangi (driver).

Moreover, more names include David Ongare (Director Environment Compliance), Joseph Makau (Head Environmental Impact Assessment) and Mirrian Kioko.

Five other suspects are still at large and are wanted by the DCI to answer to their crimes that have caused severe harm and discomfort to families living in the area.

Arising from the blast, six fatalities were recorded, and about 300 persons suffered different degrees of burns.

The report from the DCI indicated further that some victims were treated and discharged, while others are still admitted at various hospitals in serious conditions.
