Friday, February 16, 2024 -Government has elaborated on its resolve to throw weight and facilitate Raila Odinga’s candidature for the top African Union chairmanship.
Making this official confirmation on Friday February 16 morning, Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in full support of claims that Odinga is being supported by the State to replace the incumbent, Moussa Faki Mahamat, at the AU headquarters.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei has, for the first time, made this confession adding that the William Ruto-administration is mandated to make sure anyone from the country who deserves and qualifies for any international role is fully facilitated for the benefit of the country.
On Thursday February 16, the PS noted that the Foreign Affairs Ministry was the government’s only agency mandated to facilitate the whole process and exercise and that this is not out of the law.
“Facilitating the candidature of qualified Kenyans to regional and international organizations is one of the mandates of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We are on standby to support this quest for a well-deserving national,” the PS stated.
This means, the Ministry is focused on mobilising resources as well as lobbying for the continental support to see Mr. Odinga clinch the seat.
Those in government already happy and endorsed the process include Public Service Cabinet Secretary CS Moses Kuria and Millicent Omanga, among others.
“With incoming Chair of Africa Union Commission. Africa will never be the same again. Super friend and a wonderful soul,” CS Kuria posted.
Lawyer Ahmednasisr Abdullahi, who is a close friend to President William Ruto, also endorsed Odinga as the most suitable for the post.
The Azimio boss is already enjoying the support of former Nigerian head of State Olesegun Obasanjo who asked African heads of State to support him during campaigns and elections.
Speaking on the same, the opposition chief accepted the endorsements saying he is upto the task.
