Thursday, February 22, 2024 – Rtd President Uhuru Kenyatta has broken his silence following increased reports that he had started de-campaigning Raila Odinga’s African Union AU bid.
Taking to his official communication pages today Thursday February 22, the ex-head of State said his traveling to Tanzania was informed by a meeting he had in Dar Es Salaam.
In the statement, Uhuru noted that he had to meet with President Samia Suluhu after his invitation to show up at the 1st International Colloquium on Promoting Cross-Cultural, Linguistics and Economic Diplomacy for Sustainable Futures.
“President (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta paid a courtesy call on Her Excellency Samia Suluhu, President of the United Republic of Tanzania at State House, Zanzibar. The former President had earlier attended the 1st International Colloquium on Promoting Cross-Cultural, Linguistics and Economic Diplomacy for Sustainable Futures in Dar es Salam,” read the statement seen by Kenyawide.com.
Uhuru attended this event that was jointly organized by the African Institute in Indigenous Knowledge Systems (AIIKS).
He addressed the specualtions following a claim that his many tours across Africa are meant to water down Raila Odinga’s quest for the top AU position.
Uhuru was claimed to be against Mr. Odinga’s AU bid, instead, choosing to support former Tanzanian head of State Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete who is said to be also warming up for the position.
Mr Odinga, started preparing ground for his chairmanship at the AU after Nigerian Olusegun Obasanjo openly threw weight behind him.
Olusegun, in the Karen press briefing, announced that he will spearhead Odinga’s campaigns to make sure he gets the required backing from many African presidents.
Shortly after their press briefing, Government of Kenya also waded into the debate confirming that it was in top gear talking to other nations to support Odinga.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, while speaking on the sidelines of the recent AU conference, highlighted the need to have the next AU leader from East Africa.
Additionally, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary (PS) Korir Sing’oei also made this announcement official saying, their government was mobilising resources to see Odinga’s candidature sail through.
