Friday, March 22, 2024 –Chief Justice Martha Koome has faulted President William who claimed that the Judiciary and the Executive had come to a common agreement on the housing levy matter.
Just moments after President William Ruto claimed that he had a successful boardroom agreement with the Judiciary on the implementation of the programme, Martha Kaoome has distanced self from the utterances saying she is not aware of such an agreement on a matter still in court.
“The Judiciary is not in any way having a capacity to enter into an agreement with the executive on the Housing levy matter which is also still in court.
“I also looked at that clip where his excellency the president made the claims that we talked and had such agreement or with any judge on the same issue. It is shocking,” stated CJ Koome.
The CJ also added that, though she is not a communication expert, perhaps what the President ought to have meant is that he had agreed with the court’s verdict on the issue.
“I am not a communication expert but this was taken out of context. What I can adduce is that the president only agreed with the judgement of the court by saying such a statement in public,” she further argued.
President Ruto had just announced that he had held talks with the CJ and, together, agreed on how to get the Housing programme realised.
“We have had an agreement with the Judiciary on how we can have, in the country, housing programme and housing levy,” he announced on a car roof.
The Government housing programme is ongoing and President William Ruto is determined to fully implement it saying it does not only guarantee the poor own homes but also it is offering business and jobs to millions of jobless youths across the country.
CJ Martha Koome was speaking this flanked by Supreme Court Judges Philomena Mwilu (DCJ), Smokin Wanjala, Njoki Ndungu and Isaac Lenaola during the launch of the inaugural Supreme Court of Kenya Yearbook. The Yearbook showcases the achievements and activities of the Court in the year 2023.
