Monday, April 15, 2024 –Two Kenyans and one Ethiopian are under investigation after they reportedly slowed down during a recent Beijing competition to allow a Chinese win the race on Sunday April 14.
The organisers of the Beijing Half Marathon in China have started thorough investigations into the case that may see the three accused marathoners banned or penalised for a possible race-fixing.
The events on this case emerged after the organisers came a cross a clip that showed the three accused marathoners take a discrete back step to let the Chinese He Jie go past them to win the competition.
“We are investigating and will announce the results to the public once they are available,” the organisers were quoted.
As a result, He Jie, who is also the 2023 Asian Games Marathon Gold winner would be announced the winner in the Sunday race.
He then openly celebrated the win despite visible signs that he was allowed by fellow competitors to take the lead, unfairly.
The rest ended up hugging him in congratulations and even took photos with him as a sign of good will.
Sources who closely watched the sport, claimed that the three were seen secretly wave him to overtake them towards the finish line.
World Athletics now say that one of the Kenyans who deliberately made the sidestep to let He Jie win is represented by a Chinese agent.
