Tuesday, April 23, 2024 – Nairobi County drowned in the raging floods from yesterday Tuesday April 23 as heavy downpour continued being recorded in many parts of the city.
For instance, Jubilee Estate and Kahawa West were among the heavily flooded areas in the city. The situation, literally, went out of hand. The rivers had broken their banks causing a lot of damage around the many city parts.
Thika Road along Kenyatta University and Kahawa Sukari alongside with Moi Avenue were flooded as motorists were advised to avoid these risky routes.
Furthermore, situation at Maji Mazuri Mwiki was not so good and residents were spotted scampering for their safety as flooding waters ravaged their homesteads.
Our cross check around the city further established that the heavy rains in Nairobi saw mature trees fall down on Moi Avenue near Imenti House in Nairobi’s central Business District, obstructing the whole roadway.
Mlolongo, Athi River and Kitengela were other zones which were heavily affected by the Tuesday heavy rains as major highways remained impassable.
Following the rains and the consequent flooding, the county government has, today Wednesday, halted all pending building approvals. Review of those ongoing to be undertaken with immediate effect.
“We have banned any excavations along riparian areas and buildings, especially, those close to the affected areas. We have also halted all building development approvals around the city,” announced Governor Johnson Sakaja.
Also, the county government has halted all excavations on construction site.
On the other hand, the National government led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua today held a crisis meeting to find a lasting solution to save the city from further destruction.
