Tuesday, May 14, 2024 –A section of Members of Parliament allied to the opposition now want the Special Select Committee that investigated Agriculture Cabinet Secretary CS Mithika Limturi to be investigated over bribery claims.
The MPs allied to Azimio wing, while reacting over clearance of Cabinet Secretary Linturi, stated that corruption cleared the CS from any wrong doing despite obvious evidence that he had an upper hand in the multi-million fertiliser scandal.
The Naomi Waqo-chaired committee, on Sunday May 12, cleared Mr. Limnturi saying that all the charges leveled at the CS were fabrications and lacked basis.
The Ad hoc committee was mandated to investigate the CS and his accomplices in the impropriety and corruption claims in the Ministry of Agriculture.
And the committee, in its findings, however, returned a ‘Not guilty’ verdict amid discourse from members of the public who consumed the fake fertiliser.
The Committee’s verdict, therefore, left CS Linturi walking free as a bird even as the proponents of the impeachment motion threatened to stage another option until the CS is removed from office.
Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo told the Parliament that open disclosure of corruption by a member of the committee was now in public domain.
“I Spoke and interacted with the select committee members. I have been told that there are allegations of misconduct and impropriety by some members of the committee who should be investigated,” he charged on the floor.
But his remarks were cut short by National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula who reminded him that casting aspersions to some House members will require substantiation.
“You cannot cast aspersions against any one of them or two or three of them without a valid reason. You need to do this through a motion,” Wetang’ula told MP Otiende.
The special sitting committee that cleared Mithika Linturi was chaired by Marsabit lawmaker Naomi Waqo.
The chief proponent of the removal motion MP Wanami Wamboka, speaking after the exercise, expressed his dissatisfaction with the investigating committee saying he will come up with another option, soon.
“We have lost the battle but we shall ultimately win the war. We will not relent in pursuit of this fake fertilizer scandal that has rendered farmers hopeless and endangered the country’s food security.
“There is no doubt that all evidence and witnesses proofed beyond reasonable doubt that Linturi as the head of the docket was liable for the mess, scam and failures. The unanimous decision of 149 members representing over 30M Kenyans cannot be overturned by the influenced 7 members of the select committee,” he announced in a long statement he shared on X Platform.
Wamboka described the decision as ‘a betrayal’ to the hardworking Kenyans who wake up every morning to go to their lands to try and make an honest living.
