Friday, May 17, 2024 –Government has made an appeal to members of the public to help bail out a Kenyan man, Stephen Munyakho, who is to undergo execution penalty in Saudi Arabia.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, today Friday May 17, while addressing members of the family and the forth estate from Nairobi, sought help from the public saying, their government has no such provision of help and cannot draw monies from public coffers before it is budgeted for.
Speaking in his capacity as Foreign Affairs CS, Mr. Musalia Mudavadi said, the financial constraints facing his ministry cannot allow them to secure the release of Stephen Munyakho from a Saudi Arabian jail.
Munyakho has been in prison for over 13 years following a protracted court battle that saw him finally lose the case to a Yemen family based in Saudi Arabia.
He is accused of fighting and killing his co-worker while on duty in the Gulf country a decade ago.
“There are no funds we can draw under such circumstances unless Parliament was to create a fund of that nature. We will call for a public appeal to support the family so that resources can be raised,” Mudavadi announced to the family, today.
Mudavadi also argued that, apart from the Parliament, the government can only exploit diplomatic ways to strike a deal with their counterparts in Saudi Arabia.
He described this as a long temporary and ongoing exercise that will depend on foreign relations in conjunction with security ties.
PCS Mudavadi noted that, as a government, there is an urgent need to properly fund the Foreign Affairs Ministry so that to help secure safety of Kenyans who are working out of the country.
days ago Stephen Munyakho mother Dorothy Kweyu, who was speaking on an international media, said, she had a word with the governmnet but the discussion was yet to be concluded.
