Saturday, June 15, 2024 –Defence Cabinet Secretary CS Aden Duale has warned a section of Mt. Kenya senior elected leaders against tribalism.

Duale said, ethnicisation of politics in Mt. Kenya was not only bad for the economy but also dangerous and could plunge the nation into an irreversible animosity.

The CS who was speaking yesterday Friday June 14 at the Gichuru Memorial High School Thanksgiving function, argued that tribal politics ended in 2013 when the retired president Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto decided to work with everybody regardless of where they come from.

He stated that Uhuru and Ruto, after taking power,  handed him the majority leadership in Parliament and also gave several other people from different tribes, important State appointments.

“We are against ethnic politics.

“We all have different tribes in our homes working for us and, as a security minister, I can say that I see alot of challenges towards tribalism. All neighbouring countries have this challenge because of tribal politics. Somali, for instance, for 35 years now, are suffering because they started coming up with small clans here and there,” said Duale.

He also listed South Sudan and Ethiopia among the African countries which are yet to settle down because of playing tribal cards.

“South Sudan is suffering same to Ethiopia facing ethnic war. Our neighbors are burning because of tribal politics and, here at home, some Kikuyus still want tribal politics,” Mr. Duale warned.

“During Uhuru Kenyatta time, we stopped tribalism. Uhuru gave me Majority leader and some other people were given appointments not based on their tribe.

If Uhuru and Ruto believed in tribalism, they would have appointed their tribes in government positions throughout,” said Duale.

The CS, therefore, advised that, for anybody aspiring to become the president of Kenya, he or she must accept all tribes as one and bring them together.

“We are an indivisible bond when we put aside our parochial biases. Our togetherness, notwithstanding our different regions, makes us a nation. We reject being divided along tribal lines by tribal chiefs. We are one nation, one flag, and one people,” he announced.

Present were Ruto’s personal PA Farouk Kibet, Hon Nelson Koech, Sylvanus Osoro, Hon. Jane Kagiri among several other elected and non-elected leaders.
