Wednesday, October 16, 2024 –A section of lawyers have continued piling pressure at the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to resign so that to save himself from being permanently banned from local politics.
Offering his two-cents on the matter, Lawyer Abdullahi Ahmednasir noted that the besieged DP has only two options left for him, to resign or to be impeached and be send to the oblivion.
The city lawyer advised him to run fast and step down before the Senate sits to debate his removal because, after the bell rings, he will never have to run for any seat in Kenya again.
“Hon. Rigathi Gachagua has a very short window to resign. If he wants to have a new lease of life in politics, he must resign before the impeachment motion kicks off in the Senate,” the lawyer stated moments after the High Court ruling, yesterday.
According to the lawyer, Wednesday October 16 should be the last day the DP is seen in office because on the follwing day Thursday, the Senate will seal his fate in a bad way.
“If he tries to resign midstream when the impeachment process is in motion and evidence is tabled and prosecuted by the representatives of the National Assembly, the Senate will not stop the process. It will continue and render judgment, his belated resignation, notwithstanding.”
But Gachagua’s lawyers have remained upbeat that, with their volumes of evidence, they will be able to prove that there was insufficient time for public views.
The lawyers led by Paul Muite and Counsel Fred Ngatia, also hold the view that the ouster motion is political and this they will prove in court.
Gachagua’s fate lies with the Senate, with the trial set to last at least two days from Wednesday. The trial might extend, depending on whether more time is needed or not.
If the DP remains adamant and he is processed through the Senate, if impeached, he will go down the record as the first Kenyan deputy president to be impeached from office.
