70% of youth to reject Referendum if held today, Report shows

Wednesday, February 3, 2021 -Young men in Kenya still don’t want a Referendum. A fresh research has showed.

According to the new pollster by the name Emerging Leaders Foundation ELF Africa, only 30 percent of individuals in the youth bracket will vote Yes if the exercise is held today.

The 70 percent which seems unsatisfied with the BBI matters explained how they had not been well briefed on what the whole exercise entails to achieve making it somewhat difficult to blindly support it.

They also said they were not given a chance to air their views to the BBI Task Force before finally unveiling the Report which, according to them, was violation to the Public Participation Act.

The research also showed that 54 percent of the respondents only came across the Report on WhatsApp, 18 percent on Twitter, 5 percent on Facebook, 4 percent on Email, 10 percent got the hard copy while the remaining 9 percent were yet to see it.

Further 47 percent of those interviewed still feel the report did not fully address youth matters while 8 percent said some youth issues were explained in the report.

Listing afew of the things the youth bracket liked in the Report, Citizen Digital reported that the proposed tax holiday, Ward Development Fund, removal of Women Representative post among a few other things were well captured.

Just a few weeks ago, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC approved over 1 million signatures setting stage for the 47 County Assemblies to take over from there.

Currently both Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta are out and about wooing the County Assemblies to pass the bill so that the country can finally have a Referendum to amend the Constitution.

They have already promised MCAs car grants in what is believed to be part of their concerted efforts in making sure the Bill sails through the floor.

“There is every justification for MCAs to get the benefit because Members of parliament are also getting it. It is neither a bribe nor a crime,” he added.

Uhuru while speaking at Sagana State Lodge, on his part, promised to make sure every MCA gets the grant.
