Long-serving Trade unionist Francis Atwoli has admitted being behind those who want the presidential term limit abolished.
The COTU boss who was speaking on Citizen Tv’s JKL show hosted by Jeff Koinange noted that COTU was considering rallying behind Senator Samson Cherargei to push for the stay in power of President William Ruto.
“Let us remove the term limit. This is what is causing us problems. Somebody is timing after 10 years, I want to be president. Are Ugandans experiencing the same problems we experience here?” asserted Atwoli.
Atwoli argued that there has been an increased culture of people turning politics into an industry where they go to mine free money and wealth in a short time.
“People have made politics to be an industry. Every morning is politics from morning to evening. Because they know James’ term is almost ending.”
Atwoli’s sentiments echoing that of a section of UDA Party members who want the term limit extended from the current five years to seven.
Senator Cherargei, a close ally of President William Ruto, argues in his draft bill that the current period is not enough for an elected president, or other elected leaders, to fulfill their constitutional mandate.
He adds that five-year term limit has not been sufficient for any president to deliver on his mandate and also it has been expensive for the tax payers as a lot of money is used to fund the election through the IEBC very five years,
