Stage is set for two Nairobi leaders to meet so as to discuss emerging issues in the County. Details have emerged.
Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko and newly appointed Nairobi Metropolitan Services NMS Chairman major Mohammed Badi will be meeting very soon so as to discuss their differences. This will be the first time the two are meeting face to face amid ugly rivalry claims.
Sonko since signing off some services to the national government, has been feeling shortchanged as well as powerless and, not once, has warned the national government from overstepping their mandate as per the agreement they made at Statehouse a few month ago.
Mr. Sonko has been claiming that Major Badi was undermining him against the spirit of their agreement which they both signed. He has threatened to revoke the partnership which he claims is unhealthy.
Notably, the two have been fighting for control of the city projects with Badi who has full support from the national government now overshadowing Mr. Sonko.
And after their issue was forwarded to the Intergovernmental Relations Technical Committee IGRTC for a solution, the plans to make the two meet and iron out their differences are rife.
IGRTC Chairperson John Burungu on Thursday August 6th made the confirmation that Badi and Sonko will be meeting to discuss delivery of services in the city.
He added that though the date is not yet clear, the ‘difficult’ meeting must take place very soon for the benefit of residents. And that this was inevitable.
“I am aware that a notice of declaration of the dispute by the Nairobi governor over the city operations has been referred to our committee, but it is something that I wouldn’t want to talk about now because consultations with the Summit and Council of Governors are ongoing,” Burugu disclosed.
He named the mediation team which will include the Attorney General, IGRTC, Council of Governors, a team from NMS and the City County Government team.
