Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi has bowed to pressure and resigned.
The vocal female politician who was handpicked to the position as an award after having fully participated in Jubilee campaigns finally tended her resignation letter on Tuesday August 11 citing frustrations.
“I think I was the biggest stumbling block for the governor but I want to pray for him. Governor, focus on God and stop threatening peoples’ lives it does not help,” The Star quoted her.
She then handed the key role to her Deputy who is also Ruai MCA John Kamangu who will be the acting speaker as search for a new speaker for Nairobi takes shape.
Governor Mike Sonko has been on the forefront pushing the speaker out of office and not once she has blamed the flamboyant politician for her office woes.
Elachi told The Star that she was now done with running the assembly and set to go back to her constituents in Dagoretti North.
“This is the right time…Last time I left with my head down this time I leave with my head high, without force,” she said.
“I humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenya. For the last few days there have been life threatening incidences. I appoint my deputy speaker, John Kamangu as acting speaker,” Elachi said.
In her resignation speech, she thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for having faith in her and appointing her in that capacity and would also wish to serve his administration in any other capacity if offered.
She seized the opportunity to ask the assembly to remain firm in supporting the newly formed Nairobi Metropolitan Services NMS led by Major General Mohammed Badi.
“That is the critical agenda. The legacy for our President and I believe he would be proud to see us support him. If I ever did wrong, within the duties I was given, I ask for forgiveness,” she said.
She further challenged her foe Mike Mbuvi Sonko with whom they have had a prolonged frosty relationship asking him to stop thriving in politics of intimidation
